Combined with the fact that we also have confirmed covid-19 among our student body, we need to temporarily (at least until 3 November, but in all likelihood longer) cancel all teaching planned to be held on campus and move online. The new advice means that we all should, as much as we can, avoid all local transportation and to avoid all social contact outside of your own family/people you live with. I wanted to send a couple of updates regarding the covid-19 pandemic. First, after some months with less rapid infection rates, the last couple of weeks have seen a steady increase in infection and hospitalization rates in Uppsala. In fact, the public health agency notes that Uppsala may have the fastest spread of covid-19 in Swedish at this point. Please be reminded that the pandemic is far from over and be extra diligent in terms of following the recommendations, including: maintaining physical distance washing your hands frequently staying at home if you are not feeling well (also with minor cold symptoms) getting tested if you have symptoms of Covid19 We might have different feelings about the pandemic, and how much we worry about it. So even if you yourself are not afraid of the virus, its spread, and the consequences of being infected, someone else could be. They could also belong to a risk group or have a family member that does. Remember that we are in this together and we don’t want anyone to feel unsafe. Second, for many of us, the initial stress experienced in the spring may have been replaced with a sense of getting used to, or adapting to, the situation. However, there is also research indicating that people may experience renewed psychological distress about six months into a crisis, such as this one, and that’s where we are now. Hence, please be aware of symptoms and seek help if necessary. Being a marine biologist Carson (1907-1964) had observed the impact, for instance, chemicals like DDT on wild-life. Her documentation of these effects helped to galvanize public action, led to a questioning of human domination of the planet’s resources and resulted in debates on appropriate policies that still are ongoing. In this session we will discuss Carson’s arguments, their precedents and continued importance. Where: Hall 4573, Östra Ågatan 19 When: 8 November, 17-18:30 Are we moving towards a more peaceful world? The question might seem naive. The daily news picture informs us of wars and terror incidents around the world. But the larger armed conflicts are limited to a small number of countries and the increased attention to them is in itself a sign that violence can no longer be swept under the rug. The probability of being killed in war or genocide has decreased remarkably in recent decades. In his recently published book Mot en mer fredelig verden? [Towards a More Peaceful World?] veteran peace researcher Nils Petter Gleditsch provides an overview of the development of the international conflict map. He argues that violence is slowly becoming outdated as a tool in conflicts, internal as well as international and paints a hopeful picture of what he calls a social democratic peace, built on democracy, international cooperation, economic integration, and social and economic non-discrimination. The book discusses several caveats to the author’s optimistic view of the future. The emerging peace may be broken by the emergence of new major power conflicts, stronger religious clashes, increased inequalities, or climate change and other environmental hazards. All these challenges must be taken seriously, but they are nevertheless unlikely to reverse the trend towards more peaceful relations in the long run.
